How we go green…

Submitted by gautam on November 13, 2009 – 2:57 AMNo Comment

Okay I am writing about another Twitter Moms Network contest. This one is hosted by Beth (Green Living Expert and mom of three), Airwear (Environmentally friendly vision company), and Twitter Moms. Airwear is a company that makes glasses lenses with environmentally conscious practices such as 100% recycled water, 100% recyclable packaging, and the company re-purposes unused materials in other industries. They conserve millions of gallons of water and eliminate 570,000 pounds of plastic waste every year!

So for this contest, Twitter Moms is asking participants to post your Top Three Green-Living Tips and how you and your family make the world a greener place.

How the Kachelmuss Family goes green:

1. I hang dry all the kids clothes after every wash. I bought this big metal drying rack from Ikea that is on wheels and I can fit 2-3 loads of laundry on it. I sometimes hang my husband and my clothes, but they seem to take forever to try. My son’s clothes never go in the dryer though, also because they shrink and stains set in if I miss them. So we conserve energy and gas that our dryer would be using.

2. We wear stuff and use stuff more than once. Pajamas are worn more than a few times as well as jeans and sweatshirts. Also, my husband and I each have a shower towel that we use for the week. At my moms house all six of them use a fresh towel everyday and it drives me crazy! Not only is that awful for the environment to keep washing and drying them, but who wants all that extra laundry!

3. If I have to use Ziploc bags, and I try to always use Tupperware or re-use containers from sour cream, cool whip or other items, then I re-wash them. Yep, I re-wash Ziploc bags. Now if they were used for something like meat or something similar than I throw it away, but if it is safe then I soap up the bag inside and out and let it dry. Not only does this save us money on buying more bags, but we are not throwing out all that extra garbage and packaging. Although, I do recycle everything I can!

So I can think of a million more ways we try to do our part for the environment, but here are the top three I could think of!
